Service patrimoine-musée de la Ville de Montmélian

Add to carnet

The restored old centre of Montmélian is a stunning example of urban Savoyard architecture: narrow-fronted houses, covered walkways, Renaissance-era mansions, old shop windows...

Description

The citadel at the bottom of the fort is encircled by Medieval ramparts. On both sides of the main road, passageways between the narrow-fronted houses lead into a labyrinth of inner courtyards and covered walkways.
The Renaissance-era mansions have kept their mullion windows, spiral staircases and Italian loggias.
Only the guest quarters and the church remain from the Dominican monastery, founded in 1319.
The Chaîne district (former entrance to the town) has maintained its picturesque character with its paved roads and old shop windows. The 17th-century Pont Cuenot (Historic Monument) over the Isère provides a lovely view over the town.
