The Church of the Marches

Porte de Savoie

About us

Built by G. Trivelli, the neoclassical church dates from the beginning of the XNUMXth century. It is steeped in what was the rural Catholicism of the Savoyard “low country” until the First World War. It is regularly open.

"The parish of Les Marches remains very old. The hamlet of Saint-André knew its hour of glory during the evangelization of the place. Indeed, this parish was the center of a deanery of the diocese of Grenoble, thus administering 60 parishes. On November 24, 1248, the Granier collapsed and destroyed the entire parish: there was therefore no longer a church. Few were the survivors of this trauma. The chief town was therefore moved: it was the end of the glory of the current hamlet of Saint-André. The church was then moved to the bottom of the current cemetery. In 1829, the church was again moved to the location we know today. These moves did not change the patron saint of the commune which remains Saint Maurice, patron saint of the Duchy of Savoy, in homage to the first parish now buried. This does not prevent the parishioners from venerating Saint François de Sales, patron saint of the dioceses of Annecy and Chambéry, Saint Vincent, patron saint of winegrowers, or even Saint André, patron saint of the hamlet rising where the first church once stood."
