A plantation of small red sticks! But what went through the minds of the inhabitants of this small wine-growing area? Come and discover it by following this path which surveys the gentle slopes of the hillside.
The walk begins in the charming village of Fréterive, nestled at the foot of the Arclusaz cliffs.
As you walk between vineyards and orchards, the thematic trail will tell you the extraordinary story of the inhabitants, who, through their ingenuity and their entrepreneurial spirit, knew how to deal with the phylloxera crisis.
While the little insect had destroyed almost all of the French vineyard in the 19th century, they made the grafting and production of vine plants a thriving business that continues to this day.
The route will take you to the vertiginous waterfalls, which descend steeply from the rock walls of the Bauges.
In winter, avalanches descend these slopes, sometimes as far as the vines. But there again, men took advantage of the whims of nature: when there was no refrigerator, they used the ice from the snowfields thus formed until the heart of summer to preserve food.
