If, today, there are only a few vestiges of the fort, the quality of the site makes it possible to understand the importance of this strategic place for the former State of Savoy and offers an exceptional point of view (orientation tables) .

The privileged position of Montmélian explains the establishment and the very old development of its illustrious stronghold.
From the Middle Ages to modern times, the castle, then the fort, suffered numerous sieges. To cope with the "progress" of artillery and military science, the House of Savoy continues to order repairs, transformations, adaptations, establishing Montmélian as one of the major strongholds of Europe.
