Conference “Discover and have fun: history of tourism in Savoie and Haute-Savoie (18th -20th centuries)”

Porte de Savoie

About us

Presented by Julien COPPIER, historian, archivist, deputy director of the Departmental Archives of Haute-Savoie

Magnified by man, nature has offered Savoie natural advantages (mountains, lakes, landscapes, valleys, forests, thermal springs, snow) which have notably enabled it to compete with neighboring countries (Switzerland and Italy), in attracting wealthy social classes, before the breakthrough of mass tourism made it a world reference.
Since the end of the 18th century, tourism has shaped Savoie. For a long time, summer tourism was almost exclusive, before witnessing a shift in favor of winter tourism.

Julien COPPIER will discuss the economic and social movements generated by tourism. It will also highlight the major chronological stages of the tourist development of the two Savoyard departments since 1860.
