About us
The Savoie Vine and Wine Museum, an unmissable site on the Alpine vineyard route
At the crossroads of the Alpine valleys, on the Albertville-Grenoble axis, the museum dedicated to viticulture in Savoie is ideally located in Montmélian, long described as "Capital of the Savoie vineyard" for its past role in the wine trade and for its typical hillsides that produce renowned wines. Installed in an old mansion, organized around a charming little courtyard, the museum unfolds in a vast space comprising 2 floors, a barn, a basement and 2 cellars.
Labeled Vignobles & Découvertes, geopartner of the Geopark of the Massif des Bauges, winner of the Iter Vitis Awards 2019, completely renovated in 2018-2019, the museum aspires to be a tool for varied knowledge, intended for the greatest number (wine lovers, families, schools…) and promoting a unique wine-growing region and, more broadly, a rich and fascinating universe.
Since its opening in 1999, the museum has forged privileged links with the Interprofessional Committee of Savoie Wines and the winegrowers.
In addition, two associations, which have set themselves the goal of promoting the endemic grape varieties of Savoie and the wines that come from them, have set up their headquarters at the museum: the Center d'ampélographie alpine-Pierre Galet and the Apromonde association .
The visit begins with a geographical and historical presentation of Savoie. Then the public is offered an encounter with the vine: passing from the wild to the domestic, this plant has shaped the landscapes and imposed difficult work on men over the seasons. The large collection of machines, tools and old objects, all from our region, testify to this.
If the historical dimension is present, the current practices and concerns of winegrowers (global warming, biodiversity, etc.) are also mentioned. In particular in small films where the word is given to them.
To enrich the visit, specialists also contribute (geology, ampelography, etc.). The auxiliary techniques and sciences of viticulture (grafting, ampelography, cooperage, etc.) are not forgotten: beautiful facilities are reserved for them. In this journey, wine occupies a special place: from its production to its conservation, great history or anecdotes, flavors and smells, food and wine pairings, practical information... constitute a dive into this captivating world.
And to enhance the visit, here and there, a few games should appeal to the greatest number: young and old.
