About us

The Route des Grandes Alpes, a prestigious tourist route, from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea via the great Alpine passes

The Route des Grandes Alpes is the most beautiful mountain route offered to motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists. From Thonon-les-Bains to Nice, 720 kilometers of mountain roads, punctuated by 18 passes among the highest in the French Alps, invite you to travel through territories with an exceptional natural and cultural heritage.

From the shores of Lake Geneva to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, this exceptional tourist route takes you through the entire French Alps. By following the winding roads, you will discover grandiose landscapes of altitude and, over the valleys, cultures and local gastronomic specialties.

Open entirely from June to October, the Route des Grandes Alpes welcomes you as soon as the snow melts, which blocks the highest passes during the winter. In spring, when the alpine nature reveals all its richness, you will be able to appreciate the diversity of the mountains, which are often preserved within a national or regional park. From Haute-Savoie to the Alpes-Maritimes, you will successively cross the massifs of Chablais, Beaufortain, Vanoise, Cerces, Queyras, Ubaye and Mercantour. You will also follow the high glacial peaks of Mont Blanc and the Ecrins, emblems of the French Alps.

For the bravest, the Route des Grandes Alpes by bike – a real monument of cycling tourism – will take you in the footsteps of the cyclists of the Tour de France, to the assault of the Col des Aravis, the Cormet de Roselend, the passes of Iseran, Galibier, Izoard, Bonette or Cayolle. To immortalize this unforgettable experience, obtaining the Borne d'Or, diploma of the Route des Grandes Alpes cyclist, will crown your personal exploits.
