Visit the Château de Miolans

Built from the 1944th century, it is considered one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in Europe and has been classified as a historical monument since XNUMX. It consists of a high court from the time medieval and a more recent farmyard housing a XNUMXth century residence.

For nearly a millennium, the castle has controlled the entrances to the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys, and therefore the roads to Italy via the Mont Cenis or Petit Saint-Bernard passes. 

The fortress offers an impressive view of the surrounding massifs (the Mont-Blanc massif to the east, the Belledonne range to the south, and the Grande Chartreuse massif to the west). From the top of the Saint-Pierre tower you will feel a sensation of vertigo while observing the Isère valley. 

It is accessible by a bridge spanning the moat, plunging you into a magical place, between romantic ruins, and a fortress preserved from wars and the wear and tear of time. 

You can admire the different rooms (guard room, kitchens, but also the prisoners' cells), since the castle, after losing its military vocation, became a state prison from 1564 to 1792. The most famous prisoner of this fortress was undoubtedly the Marquis de Sade who managed to escape thanks to the charms of a woman.
